Why Ollenu’s Loss Should Serve As An Advice For Razak To Stay At Hearts of Oak

Reports are rife in the Ghanaian media that Accra Hearts of Oak’s Patrick Razak is on the verge of joining Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Hearts’ bitterest rivals.

Hearts appear to face a battle to hold to the services of one of their influential players whose contract runs out in the next few months with Asante Kotoko reportedly ready to swoop in and sign the highly-rated Razak.

Patrick Razak has been an integral part of the Hearts set-up since joining the club in the 2015-16 season from Division side Tamale Utrecht Academy and has been a stand-out performer ever since, although the club is yet to win any major silverware.
Hearts of Oak last season lost about four key players due to the expiration of their contracts and the ambitious Razak could be the next high-profile exit.

When fit, Razak is a delight to watch and his searing pace, a nightmare for opposing defenders. He will surely be tempted. It’s only natural that he would be, such is the lure of playing for a club like Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Not only would he receive a significant bump in pay, which is tempting enough, but he would also have the chance to etch his name among the few players to have played for the country’s two most glamorous clubs.

But this presents Razak with a critical juncture in his fledgling career. He should look at the example set by his former colleague, Ashittey Ollenu, who not so long ago, was the club’s most entertaining player. Ollenu faced a similar situation after the expiration of his contract with Hearts of Oak..

He too was one of the most sought-after young players in Ghana.
Ollenu decided to join Asante Kotoko but the move was too much too soon for the tricky winger.

He failed to make any sort of impression, folding under the pressure that was heaped on him by the Kotoko family. In the end, he was ostracized and finally booted out of the club- there is a sense that he wasted a crucial part of his career.

Razak, if he is to become the true star that so many believe he will be, cannot afford to make the same mistake.

This is why he must stay at Hearts for the time being. Even if the Phobians fail to meet his financial demands, it is the best place for him to be at this stage of his development locally.

He must have patience, though. Make the wrong move now and it could hinder his development, and therefore the rest of his career.

Plunged in vapid obscurity, Ollenu still hasn’t worked his way back to the top of the game after making a misstep a number of months ago.

Razak must heed the warning that Ashittey Ollenu offers him.
