Tanzania edged rivals Kenya 2-1 in Jinja on Tuesday (20 September 2016) in the final of the inaugural edition of CECAFA Women’s Championship to claim the title.

Mwanahamisi Omari and Stumai Abdalla scored the decisive goals for the Kilimanjaro Queens in the 26th minute and just before the break.

Kenya’s Harambee Starlets, the only East African team to qualify for the impending Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in November, pulled one back through Christine Nafula whilst several efforts to even the scores proved futile.

In the third place match, Ethiopia humbled host Uganda 4-1 to claim bronze. Hasifa Nassuna gave the host the lead after only five minutes, which was cancelled by Ethiopia striker Erhima Zeregaw on the quarter-hour mark.

Zeregaw put the Lucy’s in the lead a minute to recess before completing her hat-trick in the 69th minute. Loza Abera put the icing on the cake with the fourth goal on 79 minutes.
