Today is the 41st birthday of Stephen 'Tornado' Appiah, one of the finest Ghanaian soccer players who excelled as a strong all-round box-to-box midfielder, able to defend as well as create and score goals with unsurpassed dedication and commitment on the field.

Early Years

Appiah started his career with Accra Hearts of Oak in 1995, at 15 years of age. In 1996 he had trials with Galatasaray's youth squad but was not signed and he returned to Hearts of Oak. He went ahead to play for eight other teams and retired in 2015.

Appiah also tried out with London-based club Tottenham Hotspur in January 2009 with a view to a 6-month permanent contract, however concerns over his knee and fitness resulted in no contract being offered.

He later signed with Bologna on a free transfer in November of 2009 and then joined Italian Serie A side Cesena on a one year deal in August of 2010.

He was the main winter-break signing for Serbian side Vojvodina on 2 February 2012 and debuted as a starter, gathering 11 appearances in the Serbian SuperLiga and scoring just one goal.

He retired from active football in January of 2015 after over two decades of a very illustrious professional career.

He is married to Hannah Appiah, and has four children with her. They include 3 boys and an adorable girl. His second born Rodney Appiah plays for Accra Great Olympics in the Ghana Premier League.
