BUDU’S CORNER: 5 Asante Kotoko Players That Must Improve As The New Season Approaches

It wouldn’t be too dramatic to state that Kotoko are in a freefall. The abysmal Africa campaign is still lingering over them. This has led to the departure of manager, Kjetil Zachariassen and some other players notably Jordan Opoku and Augustine Sefa.

There is a malaise among this stagnant Kotoko squad. The new Ghanaian season provides a golden opportunity to make amends and give the supporters a lease of new life, but there are players that simply must do better or step up and grab their chance if they are to etch their names in the club’s folklore.
Here, kickgh.com spins you through five players who must step up for Asante Kotoko.
Alex Didi
Since arrival in Kumasi, the Ivorian has gained a reputation as a tough tackler. However, one issue Didi has always had is retaining possession. He is often too wasteful with the ball, either looking to pick out a pass which isn’t possible or taking too long on the ball and being dispossessed.
If Kotoko want to cause problems in the final third, Didi needs to be smarter on the ball to help link up play when he receives it.
There were even hushed talks of him leaving the club for not leaving up to expectation but he was pardoned, but he needs to find a way to improve on the ball if he wants to help the Porcupine Warriors become a team that only participates in the continental competitions.
Martin Antwi
Admittedly, Martin Antwi hasn’t been given too many chances since he joined Kotoko but he has already acknowledged he should be performing better than what he has offered so far as was the case during his days with WAFA and Inter Allies. Antwi has failed so far failed to hit similar heights.
If Kotoko are to dominate the Ghanaian league in the upcoming season, they are going to require Antwi to be more aggressive when taking on the full- backs and unleashing a shot or more often with his favoured left foot more than he has so far. Kotoko require a better end product from all of their attacking options in the new season.
Richard Arthur
Richard Arthur has always been a talisman but has so far failed to impress in the famous red shirt. After his exploits with Wa All Stars that saw the Wa club wining the Ghanaian topflight title, the Black Stars B forward has shown  real inconsistency. It is understandable because not all players find their rhythm immediately, they join big clubs and Arthur is no exception.
Despite some impressive performances against Kano Pillars in both legs, he failed to have a similar impact against Etoile du Sahel and San Pedro.
If Arthur is to be warm himself into the hearts of the Kotoko supporters, he will need to greatly up his game, starting in the upcoming Ghanaian season.
The Ugandan forward seemed like a good business after Abdul Fatawu Safiu’s departure but the former Kariobangi Sharks’ offensive vulnerabilities have been horrifically exposed ever since. He doesn’t add anything special going forward and his lack of pace have meant he loses his place in the Kotoko starting XI.
He is yet to score in a competitive game. He has looked a little short of confidence in games he featured for the Porcupine Warriors, though, probably not helped by being hung out to dry as a second striker and not a target man. Perhaps, he just needs a run in the team to kick on and reach the next level.
Patrick Yeboah
He arrived with bags of potential which made him an instant starter and finding a seat on the bench for Evans Owusu and Abass Mohammed. The weight of expectation didn’t seem to phase Patrick Yeboah in the early stages of his Kotoko career and he benefited from Kjetil Zachariassen’s formations.
The former Karela man however has been accused of his inability to combine sound defending with forward raids. As a left-back he enjoys going forward with a poor recovery rate and find it very difficult when faced with pacey and tricky wingers. He has the new season to right the wrongs of yesterday.
