BUDU’S CORNER: Why Frederick Ansah Botchway Could Solve Hearts’ Midifeld Puzzle

Accra Hearts of Oak over the last few months have strengthened the depth of their team with the acquisition of Benjamin Eshun, Bernard Arthur, Emmanuel Mintah and Richard Attah. However the Phobians seems to be having a torrid time having a balance midfield due to the absence of a creative midfielder in Kim Grant’s setup.

A sturdy, but relatively immobile, central three of Benjamin Afutu, Aminu Alhassan, and Emmanuel Mintah has been enough for the Phobians in the off-season so far, but with the pressure rising for the title challenge, they seem to lack a little creativity in the middle of the park.

The Phobians were semi-finalists in the NC tier one competition last term, a good feat considering the materials at their disposal. But they were far from convincing at times. They were vulnerable to opposition transitions.

Whilst their full-backs and front three provided attacking displays, Hearts midfield only produced only two goals. This lack of threat has the potential to leave the club in a difficult situation come an off day for the attackers. With this in mind, Kim Grant could well be tempted to bolster his midfield options in the new season.

So who could fill that gap? Well, they would need someone who scores goals and provides for others, a player who fits Kim Grant’s system and a tried and tested topflight star.

Former Liberty Professional’s midfielder Frederick Ansah Botchway could just be the man for the job. His inclusion in the Phobians’ setup will be an advantage to the team because of what he will bring to bear writes kickgh.com’s Godfred Budu Yeboah.

He has been a regular feature in the Liberty Professionals setup since making his debut at the start of the 2015-16 season. He scored three goals and recorded six assists for the Scientific Soccer Lads last campaign.

As a known playmaker, he is a magician with the ball at his feet, operating in the tight spaces that deep-lying opposition defences create for his side, and can play in position the manager thinks will bring the best out of it, For Liberty Professionals, he often played as playmaker and occasionally as a winger, drifting into more advanced positions to unleash a shot or whip in an inswinging cross.

He is also blessed with the ability to play in a more advanced team-mate, or find the run of an overlapping full-back. A playmaking role is probably the position that gets the most from him, but he could perform in a number of roles should the tactics require.

His ability to deliver quality dead ball situation can be transferred to open play, and with this in mind, he can pinge passes from a midfield position, or swing crosses in from either wing. This is more ideal for the more physical players in the Hearts team, and you can imagine the likes of Kofi Kordzi or Abubakar Traore lurking in the box at set pieces, relishing the prospect of a Botchway cross.

With his spiky personality, he’s aware that his progress as a footballer will help him and his family enjoy a better life. His application on the pitch, in training, and his general enjoyment will be influenced by this, and it’s something that will endear him to the fans if his performances are up to scratch.

His reading of the game is so good that he anticipates situations before they escalate. Perhaps more importantly, he is a leader, the kind of player others look up to and improve upon their game to impress. With him in the Hearts side, the other team mates will perform because he wouldn’t have it otherwise. Put simply, Botchway offers Hearts something they don’t have.

That spark, that flair from the centre of the pitch.
Without the ball, Kim Grant places great emphasis on quick transitions to defence and an aggressive pressing scheme; offensively he prefers speed to elaboration in the build –up, and greater directness in his team’s passing and it requires an individual who is capable of mixing sound technique with high levels of endurance and an unquestioning desire to work.

In all these respects, Frederick Ansah Botchway fits the bill. It’s worth making: Botchway’s signing would be the same ideal way to propel the Continental Club Masters to greater heights. He has all the attributes required to succeed at Hearts and most fans after watching his video montages on YouTube already know that.
