Meet Emmanuel Agyemang Badu: Kumasi Asante Kotoko Minister Of Defence

‘’There may be people that have more talent than you but there is no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do’’ these lines from Derek Jeter perhaps must have been the spurring element for a young center back in the Ghana premier league whose role on the field is to mastermind the number 5 position and donning the number 35 shirt for Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

The center-back played a vital role since joining the Kumasi club from Phar Rangers during Ghana’s second transfer window.

The Kumasi born and raised Badu who coincidently bears the same name as the Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu joined the Porcupine Warriors full of ambitions in the quest to make a mark in his football career.

Virtually unknown until recently, it took little to no time for the 18-year-old defender to adjust, becoming a regular at his new club.

Despite the presence of experienced Awudu Nafiu and Wahab Adams, it is Badu who is undeniably the club’s best defender and has already drawn comparisons with Brazilian Thiago Silva who coincidentally is Badu’s idol.

Like his idol Silva, Badu appears calm, carries himself with a dignified elegance and is comfortable on the ball.

He is also a difficult proposition for strikers to play against, strong in the tackle, excellent at reading the way the opponents will move and constantly making timely interceptions and is incredibly gifted in possession and a key component in starting his club’s attack from defence.

He’s also shown the capability to play at full-back due to his speed, and also in defensive midfield given his ability on the ball.

He excels well with the ball at his feet and also confident enough to play passes between the lines and is always looking to get the ball quickly.

“It’s already wonderful to play for Kotoko, now wearing this great jersey is just a fantastic feeling and it fills me with pride,” he told kickgh.com

“Great players have worn this jersey in the past so I hope to honour it. I think every player has to improve and believe there are no limits.

“I expect to play better anytime I grace the pitch,” Badu continued. “I want to improve on many aspects because you can always be better, and to give my all for Kotoko, to give 100% on the pitch and try my best to achieve great things.” He quipped

The defender has made 10 appearances so far with 3 in the halted league, 1 in the FA Cup and 6 in friendlies and has completed every minute of the games he featured.

Badu harbours hopes of making it into Ghana’s National U-20; such are the quality of his performances this season. “I hope that I can slide into any of Ghana’s National U-20,” “It would be a dream if I represent my country in the juvenile World Cup one day.

Badu’s career has gone into hyper drive over the past few months, taking him to elite level and earning him a seat among the table of men.

Like many teenagers, Badu has some growing up to do. First he’ll need to gain some upper-body strength if he wants to compete at the highest level on a more frequent basis.

Emmanuel Agyemang Badu’s ability is not in doubt, and he will now be keen to impress both on the local and international stage as he seeks to emulate the good works of his mentor Thiago Silva and etch his name in football folklore.

His persistence and tenacity of purpose will certainly get him there.
