The St. Mary's Stadium outfit has fallen short in their attempt to sign the talented winger from Mainz 05, can exclusively report.
German Bundesliga club Mainz 05 have batted away a fresh €5 million bid from Southampton for Ghana U23 star Abass Issah.
The English Premier League side has been rumoured since April considering a summer move for the 21-year-old attacker. can exclusively report that the Saints' pursuit of the pacey winger has taken a hit after the Opel Arena outfit turned them their €5 million offer.
Manager Achim Beierlorzer has reportedly told the officials of Mainz 05 not to allow the Ghanaian international to leave the club because he has plans for him next season.
He rejoined FSV Mainz 05 from his loan spell at FC Utrecht after the Dutch top-flight league was declared null and void following the Coronavirus pandemic.
Abass was tremendous during his loan spell at FC Utrecht where he scored five goals with two assists in 20 matches for FC Utrecht in all competitions.
Southampton were among the clubs that made an attempt to sign the Ghanaian international in 2018 from Slovenian top-flight league with NK Olimpija Ljubljana where he scored 17 goals in 54 matches.
German side Mainz 05 won the race to sign the pacey attacker on a five-year deal with a transfer fee of two million euros.
His current contract with FSV Mainz 05 will expire in summer 2020.
Abass featured for the Ghana U23 team at the 2019 Africa U23 Cup of Nations held in Egypt.
