Nana Asare deserves a befitting farewell from KAA Gent, says former team-mate Thibault De Smet Featured

The 34-year-old has ended his seven-year stay with the Belgian top-flight side and his former team-mate has now clamoured for a nice sent-off party for the Ghana international

Stade Reims Belgian left-back Thibault De Smet has called for a befitting farewell for Ghana international Nana Asare after ending his seven-year stay at KAA Gent this season.

The talented former Feyenoord Rotterdam lateral stopper was an inspirational figure among his playing mates especially to the youth ranks of the "Buffalos ", according to Thibault De Smet who wants to follow in his footsteps for his football career as a budding wingback.

The ex-KAA Gent youth product told Het Nieuwsblad

"Being a professional football player for seven years at the same club is impressive. As a youth player I really looked up to Nana. And I think he deserved a better farewell. "

He added: "It's a shame he didn't get a chance this summer, with his experience he could have meant a lot to this team. Nana was always so calm and took the youngsters in tow. I never saw him lose his cool. Asare in one word? Sober."

Since bursting onto the scene in Belgium, the former FC Utrecht defender has had stints with Royal Antwerp and KV Mechelen in the Belgian top-flight.

Having joined KAA Gent in 2013, Asare has featured in  272 league games, scoring 4 and providing 16 assists.

The Kumasi-born talented left-back has been capped five times by Ghana.
