Head coach of South Africa Hugo Broos is delighted to have grabbed a crucial 1-0 victory over Ghana at FNB Stadium on Monday night in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Speaking after the game, Broos says he feels proud and elated defeating Ghana - reckoning there was the motivation to win.

“I am very proud and happy today with what I saw on the pitch of my team,” he said with a broad smile after the match.

“We have made big progress in just a week. When I saw my team play in Zimbabwe there was no confidence, no determination, no belief in themselves [players], but I saw a team with lots of confidence today.

“We played a very good game. There was determination. There was the will to winning, there was discipline and that is what I like.

“We have four points from six now. A few days ago I said if we get four from six I would be happy but I thought that we could win in Zimbabwe and play a draw against Ghana. But it is the opposite now and am very much happy about that.

“We will see, if we can go on like this and make progress like we did this week, we will see where we will be at the end of the race.”

Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who was the main star for Bafana, climbed off the bench to come in for Luther Singh as he pepper-sprayed the wounds of the Black Stars.

South Africa got the goal in the 84th minute as the ball was whipped-in but Gideon Mensah's headed clearance went only as far as Teboho Mokoena on the right-hand side which the Bafana goal slasher put a brilliant ball back into the box for Hlongwane to complete the tap-in.
