South Africa secured their first competitive win over Ghana in over 20 years.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos said he did not expect to get full points against Ghana after Bafana Bafana secured a 1-0 win over the Black Stars.

According to the Belgian, he targeted four points in the first two games in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He thought they would beat Zimbabwe and draw with Ghana.

However, the opposite happened. Bafana Bafana drew goalless in Harare and produced an impressive performance to record a famous win over Ghana.

“We have four points from six now. A few days ago, I said if we get four from six, I’d be happy but I thought that we could win in Zimbabwe and play a draw against Ghana. But it’s the opposite now and I’m not unhappy about that," Broos said at the post-match press conference.

“We will see, if we can go on like this and make progress like we did this week, we will see where we will end up at the end of the race.”

The win has taken South Africa to the top of Group G, one point ahead of Ghana with four matches to decide who tops the group and progress to the final qualification round.
