Morocco continued their remarkable run in African football after edging Congo 1-0 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Tuesday night to set a new record for most consecutive wins by an African national team.
Substitute Youssef En-Nesyri emerged as the hero once again, coming off the bench to score the decisive goal in the second half. His strike not only sealed victory for Walid Regragui’s side but also saw Morocco surpass Spain’s long-standing record of 15 straight wins, set between 2008 and 2009.
The Atlas Lions have been flawless in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, winning all eight games in Group E to finish the campaign as the only African team with a 100% record.
Morocco dominated the opening half, dictating play and creating several chances, though they failed to find the target with any of their six attempts. Nayef Aguerd sent an early free-kick wide in the 20th minute, while Abde Ezzalzouli missed the mark from close range shortly after.
Congo’s Deo Bassinga offered a brief threat with a shot that drifted off target, while Eliesse Ben Seghir squandered another promising opportunity just before halftime.
The North Africans intensified their pressure after the break, forcing Congo goalkeeper Perrauld Ndinga into key saves from Ismael Saibari and Neil El Aynaoui. Their persistence paid off in the 63rd minute, when En-Nesyri calmly slotted home to score his second goal of the qualifiers.
Despite introducing fresh legs to maintain momentum, Regragui’s men were unable to extend their lead, as Congo’s disciplined defence held firm until the final whistle.
With the victory, Morocco not only completed a perfect qualification campaign but also reinforced their status as Africa’s most in-form side, heading into next year’s World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
