Kim Lars Björkegren says he rejected several coaching offers before accepting the role as head coach of Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens.

The Swedish tactician, who took over earlier this year following the departure of Nora Häuptle, led Ghana to a third-place finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), his first major tournament with the side.

“I turned down multiple offers to become the Black Queens coach,” Björkegren told Accra-based Sporty FM.

The 43-year-old added that his focus is on building a long-term project with the Black Queens, following a promising performance at WAFCON.

“The plan is to have a long-term strategy for this team. Looking at the performance at WAFCON, I believe we will be successful in the future,” he said.

Björkegren now sets his sights on securing qualification for both the next WAFCON and the FIFA Women’s World Cup, set to be hosted in Brazil.
