Black Stars technical advisor Winfried Schaefer has defended the selection of Benjamin Asare as Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper, insisting the Hearts of Oak player earned his spot through consistent performances.
Asare has been one of Ghana’s standout performers during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, helping the team secure a place at next year’s tournament with several assured displays. However, his selection has prompted debate among fans who believe he still lacks major tournament experience.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Schaefer said the technical team’s decision was guided solely by merit and preparation.
“We watched matches, and we said we need a goalkeeper, and it was Benjamin Asare,” he explained. “But we have to compliment the goalkeeper’s coach, Fatau Dauda, for the work he’s done.”
Asare’s calm presence and command of his area have been central to Ghana’s defensive improvement under Otto Addo. The 29-year-old is expected to retain his place as the Black Stars prepare for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Ghana will know their group-stage opponents for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on December 5, during the official draw ceremony in Washington, D.C.
