The Ghana Football Association (GFA) plans to introduce a minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League, following approval by the Executive Council (EXCO), the domestic football governing body official said.

The initiative, aimed at improving player welfare and curbing the exodus of talent from the domestic league, forms part of broader reforms to professionalise the local game.

Speaking on Starr FM’s Starr Sports Digest, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed the move, saying it aligns with efforts to raise standards and enhance the competitiveness of the league.

“The GFA will introduce a minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League after it was approved by EXCO,” Asante Twum said.

The policy is expected to set a baseline salary threshold for clubs, ensuring fair compensation for footballers and promoting stability in the local league system.

The proposed structure will be presented to the GFA Congress ahead of the 2025/26 league season for final approval.

Ghana’s top-flight clubs have long struggled to retain players amid poor remuneration and limited financial resources, leading to a steady outflow of talent to foreign leagues.
