Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has acknowledged that inconsistency remains the biggest barrier to the club’s ambitions of matching elite African sides like Wydad Athletic Club.

The Porcupine Warriors endured a difficult outing in the CAF Confederation Cup, suffering a 6-1 aggregate defeat to the Moroccan giants, who secured a dominant 5-1 victory in Casablanca and a narrow win in Kumasi.

Reflecting on the loss, Zito pointed out that Wydad’s cohesion and stability were key factors behind their superiority.

“We lack a lot of things, but the most important is consistency,” Zito said. “This team was built about five to six months ago, while Wydad have played together for three or four seasons. It’s about teamwork, not individual players.”

The experienced coach stressed that building a competitive squad requires time, patience, and continuity — elements Kotoko have struggled to maintain due to frequent player changes and injuries.

“All we need now is to be consistent in our team building,” he added. “Consistency goes with quality. Once injuries and transfers set in, you definitely lose that consistency.”

With their continental campaign over, Kotoko have now turned their attention to the Ghana Premier League, where they are set to face Karela United on Sunday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
