Former Ghana U-20 World Cup winner Saddick Adams has jumped to the defence of Albert Amoah, urging Asante Kotoko supporters to direct their anger at club officials, not the player following his shock move to Libyan giants Al Ahly Benghazi.
A storm has been brewing in Kumasi since Kotoko announced the sale of Amoah just minutes after their 5-1 humiliation by Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The timing of the deal, and the fact that the transfer fee remains undisclosed, sparked fury among sections of the club’s passionate fanbase.
But Saddick Adams, a member of Ghana’s historic 2009 U-20 World Cup-winning squad, has called for calm, reminding fans that football is ultimately a business and Amoah’s move makes financial sense for both the player and the club.
“Let’s educate the fans, let them know football is business,” Adams said in a video message. “I know what he is going to earn there is going to be enough for him and his family and the reason Kotoko accepted the deal is because they knew it’s enough.”
Amoah, who lit up the Ghana Premier League last season with 16 goals in 30 appearances, is reported to have received a $200,000 signing-on fee and will earn a $20,000 monthly salary, which could rise to $25,000 based on performance.
Adams insists the focus should now shift to how Kotoko use the funds from the transfer.
“Channel your anger to the club,” he said. “Get them to use the money they’ve received from Amoah’s sale to build infrastructure, to buy good players to replace him. They should build training facilities. They should do things to develop the league and the club. It’s not always about three points.”
The former striker’s comments have struck a chord with many supporters, who are demanding transparency from Kotoko’s hierarchy after the sudden sale of their star man.
